Artists - Biographies

 

IVAN VEČENAJ

Croatian naive painter, born in Gola near Koprivnica on 18 May 1920.  Finished first four forms of primary school, proceeding to weaver apprenticeship. He studied painting on his own. Working in agriculture, together with his father, he painted in pastelnim bojama before he was 18. He made his documentary drawings and paintings from 1935 onwards. He started painting on glass in 1953. His first exhibition was in 1954 („The Eight Exhibition of Farmer Painters“, organised in Koprivnica by the Local Culture and Education Committee of the Municipality of Koprivnica). He painted in the style of peasant amateurism. From 1962 onwards, he broadened his iconography of Podravina.

His works were exhibited in Koprivnica, Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Ljubljana, Skoplje, Split, Sao Paolo, Basel, London, Wiesbaden, Dortmund, Edinburgh, St. Peterburg, Moscow, Hamburg, New York, Milan, Novarra, etc.
